Modern Space History: India in Space

by Priyanka Sharma, I B.Sc. Mathematics and Sivakami S, I B.Sc. Psychology

India is a country that sends spacecrafts to outer space at a cost less than the budget of a few Hollywood movies.

We are among the top five space superpowers, a feat achieved with a lot of grit, resilience and perseverance. ISRO (Indian Space Research Organization) has been and will always be the fulcrum of India’s space missions. The People of ISRO from the time of its establishment are devoted to serve our nation irrespective of all the negativity and criticism that surrounds them. They foresaw India's potential when no one else did.

Vikram Sarabhai and Satish Dhawan are visionaries and pioneers who instilled such great values in the institution. These men and the dedication they had inspires present-day scientists with motivation.

From its birth, the Indian space industry has made huge strides in the field of space science, launching innumerable satellites for communication, defence and other purposes, along with important orbital missions.

Encapsulating all the space missions of India will probably require a book, but if you’re as awed by them as I am, I suggest you visit their website.

The ISRO is a scientific institution with great ideals! Its work fills us with pride and teaches us life lessons. The road is not easy for our country which is considered to be a mere ‘third world nation’ by the West. Initially, we faced a lot of failures and monetary restrictions. Our nation waded through the rubble and is now tasting sweet success in space science. We can learn from our history that we should never succumb to failures. ISRO is working to bring us more laurels. We, as today’s youth, should be extremely proud of our very own ISRO and encourage it to create more records and even break its own records. The world is looking up to us!
